Saint John of the Woods - Annual Blessing Oct. 4, 2024

Saint Francis of Assisi, born in the 12th century, is widely known for his deep love of nature, animals, and all creation. As the patron saint of animals and the environment, he saw God's reflection in all living creatures, and his teachings emphasized respect for all forms of life. His Feast Day is celebrated on October 4, and many parishes commemorate this by holding a special "Blessing of the Animals."

On this day, people bring their pets and animals to be blessed as a way of honoring Saint Francis' legacy. The blessing is a gesture of gratitude for the companionship and joy that animals bring to our lives, and it serves as a reminder of our responsibility to care for God's creation, just as Saint Francis did. This tradition, deeply rooted in the Catholic faith, offers both a spiritual connection and a unique moment of community as pets and their owners come together in prayer.

Pope Francis stated in his February 2022 letter announcing the Jubilee 2025: "We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision. The forthcoming Jubilee can contribute greatly to restoring a climate of hope and trust as a prelude to the renewal and rebirth that we so urgently desire..."
